Joining to data in ArcGIS Online

Joining to data in ArcGIS Online

I'm a GIS professional. One of my clients (an ArcMap user) has asked our firm to teach some of his staff about ArcGIS online. In so doing, we are to provide an overview of GIS-- how to think spatially, how to visualize data, etc.

My first instinct when teaching "GIS 101" is joining data. You (the client/user) has a dataset (i.e. median income by zipcode), and you want to make a map. Is this possible using only ArcGIS Online?

I think this is one of the most exciting aspects of learning GIS, and I can think of a million ways to achieve this using ArcMap, python, geojson, etc., but I can't seem to figure out an easy to do this using ArcGIS Online. What are my options?

This is now possible (as of May 2016) according to ESRI's FAQ article on join and relate support in Online, though it requires the use of ArcMap:

Relating tables, via relationship classes, may be performed in ArcMap and then published as a service. Related records may then be displayed in pop-up windows in ArcGIS Online.

Depending on how the relationship class is created, users are able to add or update features and have the related data be updated in the pop-up as well.

However, related tables cannot natively be created in ArcGIS Online, and the in-memory joins or relates are not supported in a feature service.

This is possible since the March 2017 release of ArcGIS Online via the Join Features tool. The tool can be accessed via the Analysis tools in the standard Map Viewer, along with in the Web AppBuilder Analysis widget).

Mapping US Census Bureau Data With ArcGIS Online

The US Census Bureau collects a vast array of demographic and economic data on a continual basis. Much of that data at various scales is made available through tables that can be downloaded from their data.census.gov data portal.

The challenge with that data is that it is made available to the public in formats that are difficult to import into GIS software.

This tutorial describes how to create choropleths of demographic data from existing layers in ArcGIS Onlin, and how to create new layers by joining US Census Bureau tables with TIGER/Line shapefiles for state, county, and census tract boundary polygons.

GPS Data with ArcGIS Online

Whether you're collecting water quality, weather, or species distribution data, there are often patterns that are only visible in a geographic context. Geographic Information System (GIS) software can help students visualize data spatially but is often expensive and complex. With ESRI's ArcGIS online you can visualize data in seconds with a FREE account! Here's how to get started visualizing your geographic data!

Step 1: Collect your data using GPS sensor

Step 2: Export the data to a text file

  • Open the share menu
  • Select export data from the available options (connect a flash drive to export from the SPARK science learning system)

Open the tab separated text file in a spreadsheet editor to manipulate heading names. It's important to remove any special characters like degree symbols from the headings.

Step 4: Login to ArcGIS Online

Sign up for a free public account or login to an existing account and go to the MAP tab.

ArcGIS system components

Choose the system component you need to accomplish your work.

Here are some of the key components that are part of the ArcGIS system.

ArcGIS for Desktop : Comprehensive software used by GIS professionals on Windows PCs for the full range of GIS activities including data compilation, mapping, modeling, spatial analysis, and geoprocessing. ArcGIS Desktop extensions provide additional functionality such as amazing 3D visualization, network analysis, schematics, and geostatistics. Desktop is the starting point and foundation for deploying GIS in organizations. It is used by professional GIS staff for desktop mapping, reporting, and analysis. It is also used by data compilation staff to create and maintain critical foundational data layers that fuel other GIS applications. This role for data stewardship is quite significant.

ArcGIS for Server : Powerful GIS back-office software that enables centralized, enterprise-level geodatabase management and server-based publication of maps and geographic information services throughout the enterprise and on the Internet as web services. ArcGIS Server supports the leading enterprise database management systems (DBMS): Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, Informix, and PostgreSQL. It is available on Windows or Linux servers on-site or in cloud configurations. ArcGIS Server provides the core technology for implementing large-scale GIS in organizations and businesses worldwide.

ArcGIS Online for organizations : Complete cloud-based, collaborative, content management for working with geographic information. This is a key capability of the ArcGIS system. Organizations can use ArcGIS Online as a hosted GIS Server to publish their maps online. They can also use ArcGIS Online in concert with ArcGIS for Server. ArcGIS Online is leveraged throughout the ArcGIS system. It can be accessed via all the ArcGIS clients and publically on the web via the online website www.ArcGIS.com, by their own organizational accounts, and through any website in which their GIS web maps and apps are shared. This enables anyone to find, create, and share ArcGIS maps. The website can also be configured by organizations to create portals for their own maps and data.

ArcGIS for Mobile : A comprehensive set of apps that enables people to use maps, access GIS, and collect data while on the move. Apps are available for smartphones and tablets (Apple, Android, and Windows Phone) and mobile devices, such as specialized professional GPS and data-collection tablets, running Windows Mobile, Windows, Android, or Qt. Uses include professional data collection in the field, providing employees with an up-to-date common operating picture and sharing information with consumers and citizens. Maps created with ArcGIS Online can be immediately accessed on a smartphone or tablet.

ArcGIS Explorer : A free client for viewing and visualizing GIS data. ArcGIS Explorer is a great way for anyone to create beautiful interactive map-based presentations. ArcGIS Explorer comes in two forms:

  • ArcGIS Explorer Online, which is used in your web browser and is integrated with ArcGIS Online. It's a primary web map authoring and use tool . Web maps created with Explorer Online can be viewed via the ArcGIS Online website or with any ArcGIS Online client.
  • ArcGIS Explorer Desktop is a Windows application that adds support for 3D visualization, data stored locally on disk, and enterprise databases.

Basemaps and data : Underlying every great map is a great basemap. ArcGIS Online provides users with beautiful authoritative basemaps including imagery, topography, streets, terrain, oceans, and more. These contain data from Esri and its partners, along with community data built by user organizations worldwide and published by Esri through the Community Maps program. Esri also provides a wide range of additional key datasets that are symbolized and ready to put to work. A wealth of specialized maps, data, and tools are also made available by the GIS community via ArcGIS Online.

Industry-specific map templates, applications, and data models : When you use ArcGIS, you will engage with various technical and user communities to collaborate on building and sharing maps, apps, and key content. These resources provide the foundation for implementing GIS in your organization. These cover every industry, from local government land records to defense and intelligence, and are created by Esri experts working with ArcGIS user communities. The resources are ready to deploy and easily configured. For example, you can use one of the information models to implement your GIS database, assemble and collect your data, then apply an array of map and application templates to this data to create great-looking, fully functional, intelligent maps. Your starting point for these resources is the ArcGIS Community where you can also find documentation, blogs, samples, user forums, and videos.

Developer tools : ArcGIS includes a rich set of developer APIs (application programming interfaces) for implementing custom apps and workflows. APIs are available for web apps, desktop apps, mobile apps, and for embedding GIS and mapping functionality into external applications. This is an important part of the ArcGIS system because it allows you to satisfy the specialized requirements of particular users and workflows and also to target completely new audiences for your GIS beyond the traditional GIS user base, such as consumers using smartphones.

With the ArcGIS system, as with any system, you simply choose the parts that you need to accomplish what you want to do. For example, if you just want to make a map you can add into a web page showing population trends in a city, you would use the ArcGIS Online website. On the other hand, if you are a professional GIS user in the GIS department of an organization, you'll likely spend most of your time with the ArcGIS for Desktop and ArcGIS for Server software, and also work with industry-specific resources. If you are a developer looking to create a specialized application for a particular industry or market, you'd use the developer APIs, and so on. The names and specifications of the various ArcGIS products are ultimately not as important as the fact you are using the complete ArcGIS system to support your work and to make a difference.

Plotting X/Y Coordinates

You can plot your data that has coordinate information (latitude/longitude or any other coordinate system) into ArcGIS. The program plots the locations as points on your map. Online help.

VERY IMPORTANT: In the Add XY dialog box, look at the coordinate system that ArcGIS is assuming your data is in before you click through to create your points. The default will be whatever your data frame is in. For instance, if your data frame uses NAD83 State Plane North Carolina Feet, then ArcGIS assumes your tabular coordinates are in feet, not degrees. If these are really Longitude (X) and Latitude (Y) coordinates in degrees, you must change your coordinate system to unprojected (geographic) coordinates, typically WGS84 (the last choice under Geographic. World).
